Blog Action Day for the Environment - Bins

Here are our bins which we have just been given by Hull City Council last year as part of a special push for recycling as before we just had one. The green one is for general waste and the blue one is for paper. We also have a bin to collect plastic bottles.

I am particularly pleased about the blue bin as I am a great paper reader and before we very quickly accumulated huge piles of papers under the stairs which we then had to get to the recyling plant ourselves (thereby wasting more energy). If you look at how high the blue bin (which fills up very quickly) you can imagine how big the pile of papers was. Sometimes I look at the size of my Sunday paper and feel guilty at the amount of trees being wasted to make it but I reason that lots of young trees growing to make the papers have got to produce a lot of oxygen which has to be a good thing environmentally speaking. Recyling of papers is a good thing. Where we used to live, as my husband could tell you, there used to be a large metal container where people used to put their used papers and I was not above quickly taking one off the top if it was a particularly interesting title and there was nobody about , rather in the manner of young disreputable bag lady in the making.

Everyone cooperates with the bins and pulls all the bins to the front verge on bin day, which can only mean that they think it is in a good cause. I do think people drink a lot, looking in some of the bottle bins as I walk by. Some of them are shockingly full after only a week. I can only hope they have been having cocktail parties.

We have a good system here too, they collect a green bin with garden waste and cardboard once a fortnight and a black bin with unrecyclable stuff the other week. Once a week they collect a green box with recyclable stuff like bottles, tins, newspapers, plastic bottles. I get annoyed because they don't collect all plastics as they did in London, but they do separate stuff as they collect it, whereas in London they used to chuck all the bottles in with everything else, so I wasn't sure it really got recycled. It is easier when the Council does this, isn't it? We used to spend ages going to the recycling centres with old clothes and bottles.... glad you don't live round here with your bottle-counting ways... just joking really Bevy!

Hi, Bev! come take a look at your lovely entry on the exhibit wall - it looks great! I didn't know how to credit you , so I put Eleanor's mum, a proud label if any, right? Let me know if you want me to change anything. Sorry I haven't been up to communicating with you (and most other except for my sis), but I've been not feeling very well at all these last two weeks, and just getting online was a problem. I did love your collage that you did, and tried to copy to put on the site, but I couldn't fix the lighting problems in it, and because I would've had to crop it further, it lost most of its details and ended up too fuzzy. Sorry about that - I imagine you must have been wondering what the heck happened with that and why I never said anythinhg - so there you have it. Anyway, if you have any questions, or whatever, you have my email. Hugs, R

That's lovely Rima. Thank you very much. I didn't expect to have anything up as I thought I had to scan it or e-mail it and as my husband is away, and he does things like that, I couldn't manage it myself as it seems to need all sorts of complicated passwords. I am very touched!

Eleanor, we'll get your mum back into creating some artwork yet, right?! I'm so glad you guys are having fun with this, and i haven't abandonned the collage you came up with - we'll work on it and get it done somehow.
Hugs

I will try to scan a tidied version to you when hubby gets back. Can't expect you to do all the work! I like the use of the photo though.

I wish we had a recycle program but since we live in the country we don't. I load all my stuff up about every 3 weeks and go to the landfill where they have special building for me to unload my stuff into. Doesn't matter that I have carefully sorted bins, it all goes into the same pile to get resorted elsewhere (they say). Strangely enough they don't take cardboard or glass. I envy the town-dwellers that have these programs.
