Two Things Challenge - Gaudy/Elegant

This is a picture of the oldest sweet shop in England taken in Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire. I have been all over the South and seen the Cotswold thatched cottages but I don't think you can beat an honest to goodness Yorkshire village with the stout stones bearing the weight of centuries, garlanded with flowers and hanging baskets in the summer.
Note the beautiful shop frontage with the elegant glass vials of sweets in the window. It has got tiny carousel in it, and I was going originally going to put a pic of a carousel in my challenge for gaudy, and it looks like the management thinks it will blend in with the sweets. One of them contains handmade sugary pink fluffy puff balls. They may be handmade, but with the best will in the world, they are gaudy.

Hi Beverly,

Is this image the same one we used in Rima's challenge? I like this shop a whole lot. Luscious looking - good for gaudy and elegant!

Lovely picture and what a good quality pic it is! Enlarged beautifully so we could see the sweeties. Argh, I've only just done the Obscure and Reveal, better get my skates on.

I think low level drizzle makes for the best quality of light for taking pictures in, shows up all the colours to their best effect.

OK, Frances, with your enlargement facility. They weren't rubarb and custard bulleyes, but I was in a hurry and it was artistic licence.

I don't really know Diane whether it is the same picture, because I didn't do the challenge. I suppose Rima could have been to Pateley Bridge....

Diane, I have just been your blog which has some lovely imagery and it has inspired me to try and have more attractive things on my blog. Still, the sweet shop is a start.

I've been to that sweetshop - we spent the summer at Pateley Bridge many years ago, I think we rented an old Vicarage at the top of the hill - I recently found some very rubbishy pics taken with an ancient Brownie my Grandad gave me - should look for them. The enlarge does make some of the sweets look a bit garish, though, sort of Just Williamish.

We have often been to Pateley Bridge. There is a great museum with all the interesting artefacts collected over the years in the Old Workhouse near the top of the hill. I like organic old museums like this more than the modern manufactured variety which somebody has designed. It has a reconstruction of an old court and lots of Victorian people and penny slot machines. Places like Plately Bridge, Yorkshire country towns, are often surprsingly arty-farty (Hebden Bridge is another case in point)so has some interesting shops. We sat in a pub at the top of a hill at the other side Pateley this summer along with a load of bikers who had stopped to take refreshment. Bikers are surprisingly aimable and cultured folk, reading the Guardian and such. I suppose they have to be nowadays, what with the insurance premiums being so high for motorbikes, and are all probably working in the higher echelons of the caring professions and on a day out.
